Tanner spun left to avoid Denny’s charge then saw that he wasn’t the target of it. Denny, a Great Dane, had been going after Lobo, the FBI tracker dog, who’d had the temerity to be on Denny’s turf. The bitch Denny had been humping back at the security headquarters was just that, a bitch, of the Rottweiler variety. The dog was in heat and Denny saw Lobo as competition for her. The two dogs went at each other ferociously, granting Tanner an opportunity to head for his vehicle again.

He was a hundred feet from the back road when he saw Hal’s security patrol vehicle. Then, he spotted Hal, as the security guard jumped out from behind a tree.

Tanner had smelled his aftershave and heard his movements before Hal came into view. He squirted him with the pepper spray as Hal was bringing up his gun. The gung-ho guard released a wail, then had trouble catching a breath, as his eyes began to sting.

Tanner guided Hal close to the security patrol vehicle and activated the light bar on the roof. Seconds later, the helicopter made a pass overhead. The metal bird had gone out in a wide circle and was searching for civilian vehicles.

From the air, Tanner and Hal would look like a team of cops guarding a perimeter position. When the chopper moved away, Tanner left Hal, who was still suffering from the pepper spray. After turning the vehicle around, Tanner drove off. If the helicopter spotted him again, it would mistake him for one of several patrol cars in the area.

The killing of Jack Bellamy had seemed an easy task to Tanner. Now, he had nearly died in an ambush, came close to being in the FBI’s custody, and had only hours left before he became the first Tanner to ever fail. He swore to himself that when he finally left Byzantine behind him, that he would never return, not for all the money in the world.
